Most of the furniture included bears the Morgans & Wilcox name stamped into each length of metal furniture as well as PAT. This offering is ideal for large letterpress presses as well as Vandercook Proof presses.

Very compact Oak cabinet 5 3/4" wide x 12" deep x 29 1/2 tall. This is extremely valuable asset in close quarter /small shops where every inch needs to pull is own weight.

Endless possibilities for how many differing forms you can lockup with a minimum pieces of furniture. The Skelton Steel Furniture Cabinet has the original nameplate with Morgans & Wilcox Mfg. Middletown, NY stamped into a nickel plated steel tag.

The matching cabinet for the Skelton Steel Furniture is a very rare find. As you can see in my pictures it matches the one shown in their early 20th century catalog listings. I've included two descriptive listings from type and equipment catalogs for a better description of its many uses. The following information was lifted from Barnhart Brothers & Spindler Type specimen and equipment catalog #25. Furniture of this style is especially useful and economical in filling large blank spaces.

The pieces are of solid drawn steel, with notched ends. To fill any given space of square or oblong shape, four pieces of the correct size are used, forming an interlocking frame, the open center being a saving in material and saving weight of the form. For instance; with a blank space 48 x 60 ems, 80 square inches, to fill - using four pieces of 36 Point Skeleton Furniture, there is a saving of 63 square inches of ordinary furniture.

It is especially practical in the makeup and lockup of blank book forms, and in registering color forms. Where space permits the use of an individual frame of Skeleton Furniture with individual lockup for different parts of a color form, any such part can be registered without disturbing other parts of the form. The following additional description was lifted from a 1912 American Type Founders Type Specimen and equipment catalog. Steel furniture has been in use for many years past and is one of the greatest labor-savers ever introduced to the printing trade.

It is a well tried and useful device for saving time in making up and locking up printing forms. It is made from especially cold drawn steel, accurate in every dimension to the thousandth part of an inch, and cut to accurate lengths with milled notched ends. Which can be quickly set around blank spaces instead of filling them in the ordinary way with wood or metal furniture. For color and blank it is exceptionally valuable, as it eliminates shrinkage.

Due to changes in the temperature. Weight for weight it goes six times as far in filling space as metal furniture and can be used in from one-half to one-sixth the time.

It is practically indestructible, and being made of steel, always remains accurate. Four pieces each forty-two picas long will fill a blank of forty-nine square inches, weight but little, be almost instantly installed and prove secure with a minimum of pieces. Using the larger pieces, eight will fill a blank twelve by twenty-four inches, or two hundred and eighty-eight square inches, the few pieces required, for large spaces, its security, and little liability to damage by use or from corrosion, gives this steel furniture advantages possessed by no other material for the purpose. This collection of Skeleton steel furniture comes in three styles of furniture. Style #1 is 24 point steel w/one 12 point notch. I have 64 pieces that are this style ranging in lengths 6 - 42 picas. Style #2 is 36 point steel w/two 12 point notches. I have 39 pieces that are this style ranging in lengths 32 - 72 picas. The two styles listed above can be used together to make a form. Style #3 is 36 point steel with one 18 point notch.

I have a total of 8 pieces that are this style. Four pieces are 30 pica lengths and four are 42 pica lengths. They cannot be interchanged w/style #1 or 2. These eight pieces can make one 30 pica square and one 42 pica square or two 30 x 42 pica rectangles.
