Letterpress Wood Type 30 Line /5 inch ANTIQUE Complete Cap Font 66 pieces

Offered: Vintage letterpress 30 Pica Line (approximate letter height of 5 inches) American Wood Type offering of "Antique" wood type. This is a hard to find complete font of Cap letters and punctuation only. Font offered has an inventory of 59 Cap letters and 7 punctuation. The character count of each Cap letters and punctuation are included below with notes. The wood type font offered has manufacture's imprint stamp on the Cap "A" and reads as follows: AMERICAN W.

It appears there were several American Wood Type Companies, and it is not clear to what company this imprint belongs, imprints that include South Windham undoubtedly refer to the one founded by Mr. In 1878, reorganized in 1883, and continued until around 1900, when it is believed to have been called Tubbs & Co.

In 1903 it was moved to Ludington, Michigan, and called Tubbs Mfg. The last known American Wood Type Co. (AWT) was located in Long Island City, NY.

Which discontinued production of wood type in the late 1990's. To my knowledge none of the wood type manufactured by AWT of Long Island City, NY carried a makers imprint. Wood type Antique is a slab-serif letter, unbracketed and, in most instances, with a serif that is nearly equal in weight to the stem. The serif is heavier than the stem in French Antique, Egyptian Antique, and some of the Specials; it is lighter than in Antique, Antique Light Face, and Extended Antique.

The principal derivative faces of Antiques are Clarendon, Antique Tuscan, Grecian. Latin, French Egyptian Antique, Aldine, Columbian, Ionic, and French Clarendon.

Antiques and its secondary face, constitute a major portion of the nineteenth-century typographic styles. This offering would make a very nice addition if you have been considering adding wood type to your shop's inventory. This is a larger size (five inches tall) a hard to find size, with an ample supply of all letters. If you own a Vandercook, Challenge or any other brand Letterpress Proof Press you know how hard it is to find a complete alphabet letters set of this size.

Most older wood type has a fair share of wear and tear as well as dings in the type face that occur through the years. Some wood type lovers refer to this wear and tear affectionately as "patina". There are a few letters included in this offering that have dings/ divot. I've included in my photos, two letters that have dings/ divot, Cap letters R & Y. These two letters have a pronounce ding, not sure how it occurred since it was prior to my ownership.

The letters are still usable and have a perfectly good un-dinged replacement included in this font. The remaining wood type in this offering is in remarkably good condition and does not have built up ink deposits on letters. The sharp interior cuts on the letters remains sharp and well defined. Please carefully view all photos included with this offering for acceptability to shop use. This font was photographed in two full size blank type cases.
